Digital Nomad Visa: Overview

An applicant is usually required to confirm that he or she receives a certain income which comes from sources abroad (to ensure that they will not take any local jobs away). He or she is strongly encouraged to set up a local business, create jobs for the country’s residents, and buy local goods and services. This is an absolutely reasonable step for the economies that want foreign capital to come in but are unwilling to support non-residents at the expense of social programs.

There is one drawback, however: the minimal income set for a digital nomad to be eligible is often too high, which makes it impossible for beginners to take advantage of any program.

This is the reason why we selected seven programs that will be suitable even for those who are on a tight budget (if you earn 1,500 US dollars or even less, it will be enough to qualify).

Let’s look at the offers available.

Bermuda (No Income Threshold Set)

Take advantage of a digital nomad visa program launched fairly recently (in 2020) to enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and wonderful beaches. Foreigners also appreciate high-quality medical services, delicious cuisine (a combination of African, Spanish, British, and Caribbean dishes), and high-speed Internet connection.

If you want to include your family members in the application, all documents should be submitted on the same day!

You will need to prove you will earn enough to support yourself or your family (a bank statement is OK, but you can discuss other options with our experts). The cost of living on the island is not very low, so you’d better set your budget in advance.

If you are not a resident of Canada, the US, UK, or EU, you will need an entry visa (apply for it 1 month before the date of relocation).

You will not have to wait for long: the Bermuda Visa will be approved in five days.

Brazil (Monthly Income of USD 1,500 or Bank Deposit of USD 18,000)

The program is new (in fact, the first remote workers were accepted in January 2022), and it gives you the right to legally reside in the country for two years.

A sufficient bank deposit is an ideal solution in this case as it will give you an opportunity to work at a comfortable pace – otherwise, you will have to provide proof of sufficient income to the authorities on a permanent basis.

What attracts digital nomads here? If you like adventures, the Amazon rainforests will be an exciting place for you. City lovers will find excellent urban environments, like the legendary Rio. And if you enjoy a weekend at the beach, discover plenty of excellent locations that Brazil may offer.

In addition, the cost of living is not very high, so it may be exactly what you need!

Cape Verde (Monthly Income of USD 1,500)

If you want to discover an amazing mixture of Portuguese and African culture, explore the nine islands off the African west coast (that make up the state of Cape Verde) – each with its original color. Digital nomads usually flock to the capital of Praia and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of the place.

Visa holders can reside in the country for half a year and then extend it for the same period.

You will need an income of USD 1,500 for yourself and USD 2,700 if you take your family with you.

The visa is issued within two weeks after you send the documents.

Pay attention to the limitations, though: you should come from Europe, North America, the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), or the Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO) to apply.

Colombia (Monthly Income of USD 900)

Colombia is turning into an increasingly popular jurisdiction for digital nomads, especially the cities of Bogotá and Medellín. If you come from a country with long cold winters, you will enjoy the place as you will have spring weather all year round – along with stunning views of nature, of course.

This is one of the most affordable options in South America, and it is really good for beginners. Mind, however, that the visa is formally issued for two years, but you cannot actually live in the country for more than 180 days a year.
